Welcome Employees!

May 22nd, 2017 · No Comments

We posted a while back about making the New Kid on the Block comfortable with their new position.  We also posted about Employee Retention and offered some great tips about keeping employees.  I’d like to share a few more tips to make the onboarding process go more smoothly!

First things first, you’re spending good money on recruiting, so don’t rush the onboarding process!  Poor onboarding can make your organization a revolving door, and that can get expensive!  Here are a few tips to make the first few days easier for everyone:

*  Get all the new hire paperwork done and out of the way as soon as possible – before the first day even!  If you’re unable to have the person come in prior to their first day, try and minimize the paperwork to the first hour or two.  If there are videos or handbooks to go through, try and space them out so you don’t bore your newbie to tears on day one!  Break it up and give them a tour of the facility, introduce them to co-worker, treat them to lunch.

*  Have their computer and phone set-up before their first day.  In order to make them feel like a valued team member – this is an important step!  Go above and beyond by ordering them business cards, a name plate for their door, make sure they have a mail slot in the mail room.  Do what you can to make them feel like they are an important addition.

* Establish a routine for them – granted they will change or adapt to best suit their needs and ability, but it’s nice to have an idea of what’s expected of you, as a new person.  Set up their calendar with any important deadlines and include some milestones so they have something to work towards.

As mentioned in the post New Kid on the Block, follow-up and check in!  Make sure your new employee is comfortable.  That’s the first step to a lasting relationship!

Good luck!
