Employee Retention

November 4th, 2014 · No Comments

We found you some good people, now it’s up to you to keep them! Having a high turn-over rate is not only costly; it can also hurt your reputation with potential, new and existing employees.  Here are a few tips to try and improve your employee retention.

*  Work with an awesome staffing service – such as MEB Resources – so you hire individuals who are best qualified and suited for the position right from the start! If you do hiring on your own, be sure to sharpen you interview skills so you’re asking specific questions that pertain to the position you are looking to fill. (Not just the standard, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years…” questions.) Be sure to get a good feel for the candidate to determine if their personality will fit with others in that department.

*  Offer benefits and have a competitive starting wage. Do some research on what other companies within your industry have to offer. Most candidates tend to go where the grass seems greener. If your company can’t compete with this, offer quarterly or annual reviews with a potential wage increase or an annual bonus based on job performance. It’s very important to review your compensation and benefits packages at least once a year if you want to keep your employees happy and coming to work every day.

*  Say “hello” to your employees. Everyone wants a sense of belonging to something. Make your employee feel welcome by taking a moment to say hi, ask them how things are going, do they feel like they are getting all of their questions answered, etc. Two minutes of your time can really make someone’s day.

*  Acknowledge good behavior, an order met on time, great teamwork on a project – bring in donuts, order pizza, send out a company-wide email telling others. Most importantly, say thank-you to each and everyone involved face-to-face. Your employees will greatly appreciate the acknowledgement and will continue to do a great job.
