Habit of Mind 9: Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision

Language and thinking are siblings, very closely intertwined. Foggy, vague words are a replication of a foggy and vague mind or thought. Intelligent people like you, strive to use concise oral and written communication that is strong and specific. In this art, accuracy is key.

Personally, this Habit of Mind is one that I struggle with the most! This quote explains it perfectly!

It is like I assume the person that I communicating with has such a strong personal connection to me that they will understand my display of communication —well I am always wrong on this.

I forget that everyone listens and understands differently. Every human is an audience and every audience is vastly diverse. The diversity I refer to connects to a multitude of things, all these things can impact the ability and quality of the the listening skill and the understanding skills. The multitude of factors are : emotional state, emotional intelligence, mood, respect, mind frame, opinions, ability to clear mind of bias or lack their of and so much more.

All of these things are why when you communicate you must do well to remove your own bias, emotion and personal thoughts. Just communicate it and allow the information to be perceived, do not have pre-notions or expectations of perception either – those will always disappoint!

Just communicate it – HA! It seems so easy.

Here are some steps to help do ALL the millions things mentioned above!

  • Know your point. Be crystal clear about what you want to achieve as a result of your communication.

  • Limit yourself to three main points. Any more than that and you confuse your listener. Any fewer, and your message lacks substance.

  • Focus on the individual’s behavior and avoid making slanderous remarks when offering feedback. The purpose of offering clear feedback is to improve performance, not to make an enemy by decimating the individual’s confidence.

  • Think of devil’s advocate and have answers ahead of time for those possible predictions

Communication is key.

Withing the workplace, the home and for all relationships.

This is a habit work developing.
